About the Role

Sewell Wallis are working with a law firm in York, North Yorkshire, to secure a Legal Secretary to join the team on a permanent and full-time basis.

The Legal Secretary will be supporting the Probate team with preparing correspondence and legal documents, managing diaries and arranging appointments. The role includes supporting probate and estate administration matters, attending to clients professionally and referring legal queries to the relevant fee earner.

You’ll ideally have strong secretarial experience (doesn’t have to be from the legal industry), fast and accurate typing, strong written and verbal communication and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment.

 What will you be doing?

  • Secretarial Support - Prepare, format and amend professional correspondence, documents and reports; manage diaries, calls, emails and routine administrative enquiries.
  • Client Service & Communication - Act as a professional first point of contact for clients and external contacts, handling enquiries sensitively and providing a consistently high standard of service.
  • Document & File Management - Maintain accurate electronic and physical records, manage document versions and ensure information is stored securely and in accordance with company procedures.
  • Practice & Administrative Support - Assist with client onboarding, record keeping, billing administration, meeting coordination and monitoring key deadlines and actions.
  • Team Coordination - Work collaboratively with colleagues and senior professionals, provide cover during periods of absence, support new team members and communicate workload priorities effectively.
  • Accuracy & Compliance - Produce high-quality work within agreed timescales, following established templates, procedures, quality standards and confidentiality requirements.
  • Organisation & Professionalism - Manage competing priorities effectively, remain calm under pressure, demonstrate discretion and professionalism, and respond flexibly to changing requirements and ad hoc requests.
  • Skills & Development - Demonstrate strong typing, Microsoft Office, communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively while continuing to develop professional and technical knowledge.

 What skills are we looking for?

  • Experience working as a secretary in a professional services company for 2 years
  • Excellent, fast and accurate audio and copy typing skills
  • Excellent English grammar, spelling and communication
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team
