About the Role
Sewell Wallis is recruiting for a Head of Finance for a public sector organisation based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. You'll be managing a busy and collaborative finance team, so it's essential you're an excellent communicator who likes to get stuck into the numbers, a hands-on Finance leader with strong commercial acumen.
As part of the role, you'll be implementing the financial strategy, annual budget planning and ensuring accurate forecasting and modelling are in place to support decision making. As Head of Finance, you'll be ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, producing annual accounts and liaising directly with the auditors.
You'll be the main point of contact for external stakeholders and be confident in speaking to non-financial departments across the organisation.
What will you be doing?
- Provide strong leadership to the Finance and Commercial team, fostering engagement, accountability, and a culture of continuous improvement.
- Shape and deliver the organisation's financial strategy and annual budget, offering expert guidance to the CEO and leadership team to support effective implementation.
- Deliver high-quality financial reporting, forecasting, and modelling to enable informed strategic decision-making by the Board.
- Ensure full compliance with statutory obligations, audit requirements, and relevant government frameworks.
- Lead the preparation of annual financial statements and manage the external audit process in collaboration with auditors.
- Oversee procurement and commercial governance, securing value for money while ensuring adherence to public sector contracting regulations.
- Serve as the primary liaison for auditors, banking partners, pension providers, and the Government.
- Promote strong financial stewardship across the organisation by embedding robust internal controls and sharing financial expertise.
What skills are we looking for?
- Qualified candidate - ACA, ACCA, CIMA
- Experience at a senior management level
- Strong relationship building and collaboration skills
- Experience working within a public sector / government environment
- Confident with the creation of annual budgets, costing models and accurate financial analysis.
