About the Role
Sewell Wallis are excited to be working with a well respected law firm, based in Malton, North Yorkshire, who are looking for a Legal Secretary to join their busy Probate team. You'll be supporting fee earners across a varied caseload, helping to keep files organised, diaries under control and, most importantly, clients well looked after.
Although previous legal experience would be beneficial, we would welcome applicants with strong admin skills from any professional service.
What you will be doing?
You'll provide day-to-day secretarial and admin support to the Probate team, including:
- Preparing, formatting and amending correspondence, legal documents and reports.
- Managing diaries, arranging appointments, meetings and calls.
- Handling incoming emails, post and telephone enquiries, making sure anything requiring legal input reaches the right fee earner.
- Opening, closing, maintaining and retrieving client files.
- Keeping case management systems and client records up to date.
- Preparing documents, copying, scanning and arranging outgoing post.
- Monitoring important probate and estate administration deadlines.
- Liaising with executors, beneficiaries, the Probate Registry, HMRC, banks and other third parties under the guidance of fee earners.
- Supporting with client onboarding, conflict checks, client identification, time recording and routine billing administration.
- Being a friendly, professional first point of contact for clients and external contacts.
What skills are we looking for?
We are looking for someone who has great administrative and organisation skills, whilst a background in legal services or probate would be advantageous
You'll also need:
- Fast and accurate audio and copy typing skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and a good eye for formatting.
- Strong Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel skills.
- Excellent spelling, grammar and written communication.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to juggle competing priorities.
- Confidence working independently while knowing when to ask for help or escalate something to a fee earner.
- A professional and discreet approach to confidential information.
- The ability to remain calm when things get busy.
- A genuine understanding of the importance of handling bereaved clients with sensitivity and empathy.

- Salary of between £26000-£28000
